When you begin reading about business, a theme you often hear is "what is your why?"
This refers to your big picture "Why?" Your number one values "Why?" What are the reasons that you will work day in and day out on your creative dream; on your entrepreneurial vision. As I started working on my creative business, Make & Do, the process began to walk hand in hand with a period of soul searching. I realized I was stuck in my life, always in okay jobs that weren't perfect and getting me from here to there without really getting me anywhere at all. I realized if I didn't start defining some details about the road I was on, I would get terribly lost.
My way...my big "why?"... came after a lot of journaling, prayer and talking to my husband. And yes, a year and a half later my big "Why?" is still the same, which to me just means they truly resonate with my truth. Here are my two big Values and the reason WHY I do everything I do.
No. 1I wish to pay off all our debt and become truly financially free and stable
Yes. My first why is about money. But even more, its about freedom. I've realized after missing out on opportunities to travel, see friends, and work on my dreams that debt is bondage. I never want to stay in employment that makes me cry every day on my drive to and from work because I have to pay a student loan bill. I don't want to miss out on being who the father created me to be because I'm chasing after a bigger paycheck. So yes, my No. 1 "why" is financial freedom.
No. 2 I want to be a stay at home mommy, raise my own children and home school the children who need or want it. I want to be in the ministry of homemaking.
My second big "Why" is 100% family. I realized the path I was on wasn't lending itself to child bearing and that I wouldn't be able to be the mommy I wanted to be if I didn't start creating a path toward motherhood and home making. That path includes financial independence and an independent career for myself that is a contribution to the family finances. Yes, debt and financial burden was keeping me from feeling like I could ever be a mommy, and a stay at home mommy at that.
Based on these two big Why's I made a plan! And I started praying for a career I could work on that would lend itself to staying home with kids and financial freedom. As I have approached design and illustration, I think of my big "Why?" every day. Yes, it is always on the front of my mind! Its why I can work for hours straight on my goals. And why I can continue to find passion and joy in my business. Even on not-so-great days, I know that God is helping me to build a bigger thing, based on his calling and design for my life.
Are you looking to find your big "Why?" Maybe you feel like you are just walking a road, getting further and further from your purpose. Here is how you can get started!
1// Journal - Journal your heart out. Likely you know what you want, somewhere in there. Even if it feels impossible, you should write about it. Journaling allows you to self soothe a bit and helps you realize that maybe your dream isn't that crazy after all. Be sure to interview yourself. Ask yourself a question like a journalist. Keep asking yourself Why? to everything you write down until you can't answer the question why anymore. You will get to your most basic response that way. Thats how arrived at two words - freedom, motherhood.
2// Pray or Meditate - Ponder what you write. Sit and stare into space and think about what you have written or dreamt up. If you pray, then pray. In prayer you may find the Lord meets you and you lose yourself in tears, realizing you had been protecting yourself from your own dreams. Jesus meets us in our vulnerability and comforts us with his power to help.
3// Discuss your dream with a friend or with your mate - Especially one that is supportive and also one that can ask you hard questions. Get on the same page with your spouse especially. Let them know what you value and that you are going to start working toward living a life based on your Why's and Values. Yup, you are going to start doing that next!!
